Radial shockwave therapy (RSWT) is one such cutting-edge technology that may promote and accelerate healing, both in acute injuries and chronic conditions.

What Is It?

Radial shockwave therapy goes by many names, including extracorporeal shockwave therapy, acoustic wave therapy and radial pressure wave therapy. These are all different names for the same type of muscle relief therapy.

Shockwave therapy uses acoustic (sound) waves to send high-peak energy waves into an injured part of the body to facilitate healing. The technology was first used to break up kidney stones without surgery. This FDA-approved, non-invasive technique has been extensively studied and proven to be a highly effective muscle and joint pain treatment.

How Does It Reduce Pain?

Using a handheld wand, we direct the acoustic waves into the affected areas of the body. The sound waves create many effects in the body, including

  • Repair and remodel fibrotic tissues
  • Release trigger points
  • Reverse chronic inflammation
  • Increase circulation and nitric oxide in tissues
  • Activate stem cells and growth factors

These changes result in pain relief and improved range of motion in most patients.

Who Can Benefit From RSWT?

Most people with soft tissue issues and injuries can benefit from RSWT. However, it can’t be used if you’re pregnant or have a malignancy or active infection. Some conditions we see frequently include

• Achilles tendonitis
• Bursitis
• Fibromyalgia
• Lower back pain
• Neck pain
• Osteoarthritis
• Plantar fasciitis
• Sciatica
• Shoulder pain
• Tennis elbow / Golfers elbow
• Tension headaches

Any type of joint or muscle pain can typically be helped with RSWT, and it’s a great choice for sports injuries like rotator cuff, knee and elbow issues.

Meet Our Soft Tissue Experts

Muscle pain specialists Dr. Andy and Dr. Jen are experts in various soft tissue therapies, including ART® and AMIT Method, in addition to radial shockwave therapy. Both are Level 1 and Level 2 certified by the Academy of Shockwave Excellence, and have been providing RSWT for over five years, with a high success rate.

What to Expect

At your first visit, your doctor will talk with you to understand your health history and current situation. They’ll conduct a complete examination to determine the cause of your pain, and come up with a plan to address the issue and help you meet your goals for recovery. You’ll also receive your first therapy session at this visit.

This may include other techniques, such as radial shockwave therapy, such as chiropractic adjustments, ART® or others, based on your specific needs. Your doctor will explain the benefits of each therapy to you.

Typically, you’ll receive RSWT for 15-30 minutes, depending on the severity of your condition and the number of areas involved. Each session builds on the previous to create a cumulative healing effect in the tissues.

We generally recommend six visits, spaced about one week apart, to achieve your goals. As with all types of care, your results may vary, and you may need more sessions to achieve the best results. Although RSWT is highly effective for most patients, it does not work for everyone.

FAQ

Does it hurt?

Radial shockwave therapy produces some discomfort during the session—similar to what you’d experience having a deep tissue massage or trigger point therapy. Your muscles may feel sore afterwards. This is completely normal as the tissues begin to heal.

Can I work out afterwards?

No. Your body is in healing mode after this therapy, and it needs about 36 hours to rest and recuperate before you resume vigorous activities like working out or playing sports.
